Information Books Judging

During library this term we have reading and judging some shortlisted information books. There were around six books to read and judge. I learnt so much about information books.

I didn’t get the chance to read all of the books but out of the ones I did read my favourite was a book called Our Birds. I love reading non fiction books and encyclopaedias about animals, so I really liked this book. I thought the photos were amazing too. The angles the photos were taken at I thought gave you a good look at what the birds look like and they were very appealing. It also had lots of excellent information about each bird. The layout was easy to read as well.

We also discovered what makes a great information book during the judging and just in library in general. Some of the reasons I found were:

  1. Relevant information – the information is to do with the topic
  1. Illustrations or photos
  1. The layout – it isn’t difficult to read because of the way it is set out and it is slightly eye-catching
  1. Informative information – the information tells you lots of things but still has detail and the information is useful
  1. There could maybe also be some facts, depending on what type of book it is

Literature Festival

In week six of term two we had the Literature Festival. The Festival had many activities, events and other things to do. My favourite part of the Literature Festival was the poem in the pocket event. In this event you shared a poem that you previously chose with your buddies or buddy at lunch. I quite enjoyed this because I was very excited to share my poem. I also liked it because I enjoyed listening to my buddy’s poems and seeing what they chose. I learnt a lot of new interesting things about my buddies too, especially about their personalities.

As you may know, during the Literature Festival a guest author comes to the school for each year level. In Year Five the guest author was Mark Wilson. I enjoyed his presentation and I learnt many new things about lots of different topics. One interesting thing I learnt from his drawing presentation was a new technique. In this technique, you would draw a normal stick figure. Then, you would build up the stick figure by drawing another round of lines. Last, you add a bit more detail to it and shade it in to create a silhouette. I also found Mark Wilson’s other presentation  fascinating.

Wonderful Reading Review

Generally, I enjoy reading family and friends books and mystery books like Alice-Miranda, Friday Barnes and The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl. I enjoy reading these genres of books because I can relate and connect with them and the characters as well. I also find them very exciting and they make me want to keep reading. Occasionally, I also like to read fantasy books too that have a lot of adventure.

At my school we do a program called Book Chat. During this program we have approximately 4 weeks to read a specific book that other students are reading too. So far, my favourite Book Chat book has been Ranger’s Apprentice: The Ruins of Gorlan. I found this book very engaging with lots of twists, turns and cliff hangers. It is possibly my new favourite book. I am going to start to read the other books in the series. I think it is very unique.
